Feng Shui Bedroom - Is this a good layout?

Feng Shui For the Bedroom

In residential Feng Shui, the Bedroom is one of the key focuses of a conventional Feng Shui Analysis (门,主,). The Bedroom is where one enjoys a restful sleep after a tiresome day, and it is important to ensure that a sense of safety is created to provide excellent sleep quality. This can be done by ensuring the furnishings are in the optimal position, promoting positive energy flow. However, we seek to have a balance of energy fields from a Feng Shui perspective, as excess energy levels may result in restless nights.

There are multiple Feng Shui principles when it comes to the Feng Shui for a Bedroom. Regardless, it can be said that the Bedroom, especially the Master Bedroom (we do have a separate article on the 7 don'ts for Master Bedroom), is essential in all Feng Shui analysis. There are multiple aspects of the Feng Shui of a Bedroom, ranging from bed placement, mirror placement, and furniture placement. However, exceptions to general Feng Shui principles and different bedroom layouts call for a personalised analysis. In this article, we will provide some general bedroom layout ideas that are generally applicable to ensure you create a comfortable space for a restful night.

1. Position your bed correctly

If you were to ask, the single most crucial aspect of Bedroom Feng Shui would be bed placement. There are a lot of considerations when it comes to furniture placement, but in a bedroom, the bed will naturally be the focal point for the flow of energy. A correct position of one's bed will promote restful energy throughout the entire Bedroom. So, you may ask, what is the best position? Considering the many possibilities of a bedroom setup, we will guide you using general Feng Shui Principles.

Commanding position

Feng Shui Bedroom Commanding Position

Establish your bedroom entrance and ensure your bed placement is in the commanding position. This bed position ensures that the person is able to directly see anyone entering the Bedroom. This bed direction will promote a sense of security and reduce stress levels. This bed direction is also known as the commanding position, and this will prevent the occupants from being startled if anyone enters the room. This not only incorporates Feng Shui theory, but it makes perfect sense from a psychological standpoint. The commanding position also calls for the bed to be placed against a solid wall. Always avoid placing the bed in the center of the room, as this is commonly known as the coffin position. From a Feng Shui Bedroom perspective, this will attract negative energy and is one of the Feng Shui Bedroom rules that you should strictly adhere to.

Bed to Doors, Bed to Windows

Avoid bed placement that will result in your bed facing the door. Be it the bedroom entrance door, toilet door, or even window openings (Especially height windows). Facing these will create excess active energy and may disrupt the sense of calm, which is undesirable in Bedroom Feng Shui. The primary function of a bedroom is to enjoy a calm, peaceful sleep. Hence, a balanced energy will be essential in creating a tranquil environment.

The placement of the bedhead should not be sharing the same side of the wall as the Bedroom's door. This is known as Bei Men Sha(背门煞). This sha (煞) will affect the relationship of the couple. Similarly, the bedhead should avoid sharing the same wall as the toilet's door. This will affect the health of the person who rested there. Nevertheless, there might be instances where bed placement contradicts this principle, usually due to other more severe feng shui considerations. In such a situation, the Feng Shui Master will generally recommend some form of remedy to minimize the Sha.

2. Selecting the Right Bed

Well, in my humble opinion, the bed is essentially the house's most essential piece of furniture. Feng Shui principles aside, everyone spends nearly one-third of their life resting on the bed. There is no reason why selecting the right bed should be compromised. From Feng Shui's perspective, having a bed frame is essential. As mentioned, the bed head placement in the Bedroom should always be done against a solid wall. If you have a platform bed, it will be critical to ensure the mattress is placed against a solid wall, too. For the bed with frames, please ensure the bed height is ideal. It is also essential to select the correct size depending on the number of occupants. If possible, try to avoid storage beds. If unavoidable, try to avoid placing heavy items under the bed and ensure the items are neatly arranged.

3. Desk and Mirrors

Work desks, bedside tables, and dresser mirrors are common bedroom furniture. The furniture's placement in the Bedroom will inevitably affect the Bedroom's Feng Shui.

Work Desk

If possible, avoid having an overly elaborate work desk in one's Bedroom. If the work desk is designed to resemble an office setup, unwanted energy may congregate in the Bedroom. A simple workstation is perfectly fine, and one should try to ensure the desk placement is where one can observe the bedroom entrance.

Proper Mirror Placement

Mirrors may be present in the dresser or form part of the wardrobe setup. Proper mirror placement is essential as mirrors reflect energy and will likely contradict the sense of balance one requires for a good night's rest. Avoid having mirrors that face the bed directly, as this layout will likely distort an otherwise peaceful environment. TVs are also considered as "mirrors" due to their reflective nature. If TV placement in the Bedroom is unavoidable, you may consider having an opaque sliding door to enclose your TV when resting.

Bedside tables

Bedside tables and table lamps are excellent. Use soft lighting to promote a harmonious space.

4. Directions and Positioning

Feng Shui is more than just about placing all the furniture pieces based on a set of rules. Feng Shui principles are highly personalised and the most important Feng Shui bedroom aspect is none other than the directions. Different apartments or Bedrooms have varying energy fields, and selecting a favourable direction for bed placement, desk placement, or the position of your furniture pieces is paramount for a harmonious flow of energy. As part of a Feng Shui Consultation, occupant details alongside with apartment directions to establish the ideal Feng Shui Bedroom layouts. In some circumstances, certain bedroom layout ideas may have to be compromised for a more positive energy placement.

In some rare circumstances, we had offered extreme recommendations for house owners to consider utilising the common Bedroom instead of the master bedroom. This usually occurs when the Feng Shui Bedroom layouts are drastically unfavourable to the owners, and the best option is to settle for the common Bedroom instead. While we are responsible for providing honest suggestions, we respect our client's right to make the final decision.

5. Auspicious items to avoid in Bedroom

If you have read this far, I would assume that you have deep interest in Feng Shui or is in the process of optimising your sleep space. Depending on different methodologies, a Feng Shui Consultant may consider activating auspicious sectors about health, wealth luck, wisdom corner, career luck, or relationships. Certain items may be avoided to activate your auspicious areas if these sectors coincide with your bedroom area. These items may upset positive energy placement due to excess or unwanted energy.

Water Fountain/Water Features

Contrary to popular belief, having a water fountain or images of water elements in a bedroom is undesirable. Water flow is associated with vibrant, active energy that may contradict what a sleep space should be. Such water features are excellent for common living spaces such as the walkway or the living room, where a constant flow of active energy is highly appropriate.

Buddhism-related wall art/ Mythical Beasts

The Bedroom is a place of rest and intimacy. Having Buddhism-related wall art such as Thangka, Mythical beasts such as Pixiu (貔貅), Qilin (麒麟), or Longui (龙龟) may not be appropriate in the bedroom setting. These items may be more suitable for other living spaces, such as the study room and living room, which will bring about positive energy.

6. Colour Scheme

It is common for clients to be concerned about the colour scheme of one's Bedroom or the colour tone of the house. While there are certain favourable elements for every individual, the colour tone of one's home will not be significantly crucial as compared to the other aspects of Feng Shui which is more effective in promoting a balanced energy. However, if you wish to strictly adhere to the principle of colour and element, do pick a colour scheme that matches the favourable elements you require.

To promote harmony, try to pick a bedroom colour suitable for the occupants in that particular room. If your children share a room and you notice frequent squabbles, you may also consider selecting a complimenting colour for their bedsheets.

Conclusion – Best Feng Shui Bedroom Layout?

Bedroom is an essential component of Residential Feng Shui. There are certain dos and don'ts for bedroom Feng Shui. However, the general recommendations in this article broadly apply to the majority, assuming that the Bedroom itself falls within a sector that is not deemed inauspicious. For clarity, it is still advisable to seek consultation from your Feng Shui Master regarding residential Feng Shui. Achieving the best Feng Shui Bedroom Layout may require some effort, but many of these practices do not simply originate solely from Feng Shui principles.
